Building out a large, permanent presence in Europe is a critical component of Branch’s mission of being a global company, rather than a Silicon Valley startup with people sprinkled around the world.
Early last year we wrote about Branch’s expansion into London and Latin America. Today, I’m pleased to announce that we’re building on those investments and opening our newest branch of Branch—in Berlin!
This is a market we’ve been spending considerable time in over the past year, and we’re excited to now be co-located in Germany’s capital and one of Europe’s most vibrant tech hubs.
Why Berlin?
Berlin is a multi-cultural tech mecca. Tech entrepreneurs continue to stream into Berlin for the city’s low cost of living, plethora of co-working spaces, artsy and diverse social environment, and the increasingly large tech talent pool. On any Berlin street or U bahn ride, you’ll hear several languages spoken besides German, and many local tech companies enforce English as a common language for all internal and external communications to accommodate the needs of their multi-cultural staff and customers. All of these factors make Berlin an ideal central hub for us to serve the entire continent and beyond.
While Rocket Internet kickstarted the local tech scene since 2007, launching businesses like Zalando, Delivery Hero, and Easy Taxi, a new generation of unaffiliated tech startups are emerging and thriving here, like getyourguide, babbel, and more.
We are really happy to be able to work more closely with our partners here in Berlin, like GoEuro and Zalando Lounge, as well as the partners across Europe that we will now be able to better support from East to West. This includes companies like Trendyol in Istanbul, Lamoda in Russia, Voyage Privé in France, and The Telegraph and the BBC in the UK.
All of these companies are innovators within their markets, and have built some really cool user experiences using deep linking. For example, after you complete your booking on GoEuro’s site, you receive an SMS with a deep link that puts your mobile boarding pass at your fingertips.
A team as diverse as Berlin
The current team spans the functions of Sales, Marketing, Account Management, and Integration Engineering. With recent hires to kickstart our Berlin office, we’re roughly doubling our full time investment in Europe, and we expect this team to continue growing in the months ahead. At Branch, we believe the best teams are diverse and inclusive. It’s not just the right way to conduct business, it improves the work that we do. Our Berlin team is no exception. We currently have a 50/50 male to female ratio, four nationalities represented, and collectively speak eight languages. The team has deep experience working across North America, Asia, and Europe at such companies as Google, Twitter, Intercom, Vungle, and Adjust.
